A vintage mirror is old; an antique mirror is new glass made to look old and cut to size. There is no single classic, only families of designs. We carry more than ten and are adding more.
In short: a vintage mirror is an old mirror that has aged on its own. An antique mirror, in the glass trade, is new mirror glass made to look aged, cut to size and repeatable. There is no single "classic" antique mirror; there are families of designs, from light and cool to heavy and warm. We currently carry more than ten designs and keep adding to the selection. See the antique mirror page and the news on our growing selection.
The two terms are used interchangeably online, and they mean different things. A vintage mirror is a genuinely old object: a mirror made decades ago whose silver backing has deteriorated over time, giving it the spotting, clouding and dark edges people like. It is usually a framed piece, it is one of a kind, and it is the size it is. You cannot cut a vintage mirror to fit a wall without losing the aged edge that makes it what it is, and the old glass behind it is thin and rarely safety-backed.
An antique mirror, as the term is used by glass suppliers and designers, is new mirror glass whose silver has been aged deliberately, by chemical treatment or by hand, to reproduce that look. It comes in full sheets, it can be cut to any size, shape and quantity, it can be safety-backed or tempered, and the pattern can be chosen and repeated. When a designer specifies "antique mirror" for a bar wall or a kitchen backsplash, this is what they mean. It is the product we cut to size.
| Vintage mirror | Antique mirror (new) | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | An old mirror, usually a framed piece, that has aged on its own | New mirror glass whose silver is aged on purpose in the factory or by hand |
| Size | Whatever the piece is; it cannot be cut without destroying it | Full sheets, cut to any size, shape and quantity |
| Pattern | Random, often concentrated at the edges, one of a kind | Controlled designs, repeatable from sheet to sheet, chosen from samples |
| Consistency | None; two pieces never match | Panels for a wall cut from the same batch so the tone matches |
| Safety and code | Thin old glass, often not safety-backed | Modern 1/4" glass, safety backing available, tempered where required |
| Use | A single decorative piece | Walls, backsplashes, furniture, cabinet inserts, multi-panel installations |
Clients often ask for "the classic antique mirror" as if there were one standard. There is not, and the reason is that antique mirror imitates something that never had a standard: the way old silver happens to fail. Old mirrors age differently depending on the silvering, the humidity they lived in and how they were handled, so there is no single original to copy. What the trade has instead is a set of recognizable families:

If a client wants the "classic" look, what they usually mean is the mottled-and-clouded family in a warm tone, the one that reads as an old French or Venetian mirror. That is a design choice, not a standard, and the only way to settle it is to look at samples next to the finishes in the room.
Across manufacturers there are dozens of named patterns, and most suppliers carry a handful. We currently have more than ten designs in our portfolio, across the families above, and we are continuing to build the selection as new samples come in. Each design is being added to our glass and mirror product gallery with its own photograph, so the range can be compared on one page.
Within a design there are further choices that change the result:
Because the aging is applied by hand or in batches, no two sheets are identical even within one design. We show the client the sheet or the layout before cutting a large wall.
Choose a vintage mirror when you want one framed piece with real history and you have the wall for it. Choose antique mirror when the mirror has to fit a space, cover a wall, match across several panels, meet safety requirements or be repeated later in another room. For most interior projects, restaurants, bars, kitchens, powder rooms, headboards and furniture, antique mirror is the practical answer and the one that can be cut to size. See the Borough Park antique mirror wall for an installed example and our antique mirror supplier page for the service.
A vintage mirror is an old mirror that aged on its own, one of a kind and fixed in size. Antique mirror is new mirror glass aged on purpose, cut to size, repeatable and available with safety backing.
No single standard exists, because antique mirror imitates the random way old silver fails. There are families of designs: light haze, veined and spotted, mottled and clouded, edge-aged and toned. What people call classic is usually a warm, mottled design.

Yes. It is supplied in full sheets and cut to size and shape in our shop, with polished or beveled edges, cut-outs and hardware holes. Panels for one wall are cut from the same batch.
Yes, with safety backing, and tempered where code requires it. That is one of the main reasons to use new antique mirror rather than old glass on a wall.
